Project Overview
Story FX Studios, a family-owned creative company I made-up, needed a small box design that will fit a pair of earbuds or an adapter inside. It is meant to serve as a thank you gift to the consumers and reads “Make your story heard.” on the lid of the box, and simply “Enjoy.” on the underside of the box. On the sides of the box it says “With love, Story FX Studios (logo)”. Simple, but thoughtful.
I wanted this gift box to have a serene and calm feel, so as to suggest that the recipient will feel at ease upon receiving it. So I went with an analogous color scheme and a floral design, with strokes in varying line weights to convey the ‘wind blowing the flowers’.
The design of the lid and the bottom half of the box are almost fully mirrored images of each other, except for some of the strokes but mainly the logo portion. I wanted the logo to be visible on the lid, but did not need it on the bottom of the box as well. So, I filled in that design space with sets of leaves instead, almost in the shape of butterfly wings.
Here is the first and only concept sketch I did in Procreate for this project:
When refining the design in Adobe Illustrator, I extended the artwork past the bounds of the box edge so that when it is printed, cut-out, and folded there will be no gaps or random cut-offs in the design.

The Mock-up
After the flat design was to my liking, it was time to print. I made sure my color mode was in CMYK, resolution of 300, and that it was exported in a high quality file format such as a PDF. I then printed on thin cardstock paper from a color printer, cut out each piece, and folded them into the real thing.
